Deep Drop Fishing Tips & FAQ: Pro Advice for Beginners (2026)
Deep drop fishing rewards preparation. If you are new to dropping baits 300 to 1,500+ feet down, these pro tips and straight answers will help you rig right, avoid the most common beginner mistakes, and boat more fish on your first trips.
Top Deep Drop Tips
- Keep your line vertical — fish straight up and down; a scoped-out line means missed bites, tangles, and lost rigs.
- Fresh bait beats frozen — fresh fish strips, squid, and live bait consistently outfish old freezer-burned bait.
- Mark every productive spot on your sonar — save waypoints for each good drop so you can return to them.
- Use enough weight — 3 to 10+ pounds of lead keeps your rig on the bottom in deep water and current.
- Circle hooks plus steady pressure — let the fish hook itself, then keep the line tight all the way up.
- Check your rigs every drop — inspect leaders, hooks, crimps, and swivels before sending the rig back down.
- Manage your drift — use the trolling motor or drift sock to stay over structure instead of blowing past it.
- Go with an experienced crew first — learn the system from people who do it before buying your own setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is deep drop fishing? Deep drop fishing targets bottom fish living 300 to 1,500+ feet down, using electric or manual reels, heavy weights, and multi-hook rigs.
- How deep do you fish when deep dropping? Most deep drop fishing happens in 300 to 1,500+ feet of water, far deeper than typical reef fishing.
- Do I need an electric reel for deep drop fishing? Not required, but highly recommended. Cranking 10+ pounds of lead up from 1,000 feet by hand is exhausting; an electric reel makes it practical.
- What is the best bait for deep drop fishing? Fresh fish strips, squid, and cut bait. Fresh bait consistently outperforms frozen.
- What are the best hooks for deep drop fishing? Circle hooks sized to your target species. They hook fish in the corner of the mouth and work perfectly with steady pressure.
- How heavy should my deep drop weights be? Plan on 3 to 10+ pounds of lead depending on depth and current, enough to hold bottom with a vertical line.
- Can beginners try deep drop fishing? Yes. The smartest way to start is going out with an experienced crew or charter before investing in your own setup.
- Is deep drop fishing expensive to start? It can be. Electric reels, braid, and terminal tackle add up fast, which is why learning on someone else's boat first saves money.
